"The Condition of Existence" trailer

YAF member William S. Davis recently collaborated with filmmaker Jeremy Garcia to score his short narrative film loosely based around Walter Freeman's discovery and implementation of the frontal lobe lobotomy procedure. In the film, writer/director Garcia explores his search for a "cure" in its initial stages and the wave of effects this solution carries into his professional and personal life.

To score the film, Davis and Garcia collaborated closely over multiple sessions to establish the tonal qualities of the score prior to arranging, modifying and recording the various pieces of the composition.

The film's piano score exists in 9 parts, each built around various psychological states represented in the film and at times crossing from one into another as the story weaves together wild strands of passion, obsession, progression and sacrifice. Along with the directorial guidance of Garcia, the score was crafted to underpin the transformation of the main character from a humanitarian explorer seeking a pioneering act of medical discovery into an obsessed misanthrope so fixated on his legacy that he changes and sometimes even extinguishes the very definition of life with his patients.
